Thanksgiving is a time of celebration. For many Americans, it is considered an opportunity to cherish your loved ones, express gratitude for the things that bring you joy and fulfillment and, of course, to eat a whole lot of food.
While eating to your heart’s content is one of the main highlights of Thanksgiving, the inevitable consequence of extra Thanksgiving pounds is something every family member dreads.
For this upcoming Thanksgiving, however, you and your family have the opportunity to both stay in shape and give back to your community.
On November 28, 2019, Father Joe’s Villages is hosting their 18th Annual Thanksgiving Day 5K run in Balboa Park. All of the proceeds will be going directly to their Food Services program, which aims to serve 1 million meals each year to those experiencing homelessness in San Diego.
Registration opens at Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park at 6:30 AM, which also comes with a Pancake Breakfast for just $5 a plate. The “Speedy Turkey” timed race begins at 7:35 AM, and the “Fun Runner” untimed race begins at 7:40 AM. The post-race festival begins at 8:00 AM and the top three runners of the “Speedy Turkey” race will be announced at 9:15 AM.
The costs for the untimed run are $45 for adults (18+), $30 for youth (17 & under), and $40 for those who are active in the military or veterans. The costs for the timed run are $50 for adults, $35 for youth, and $45 for those who are on active military duty or are veterans. A free bib and t-shirt comes with any paid registration. Any children 5 years or younger are admitted for free, but they will not receive a bib or t-shirt.
Some of the other activities that are included along with the 5K run are:
A post-race festival with live music
A beer garden (ages 21+)
An optional pre-race mass at 6:30 AM
A meet-and-greet with Disney-inspired characters
And even better, the race is pet-friendly.
Online registration closes at 12:00 PM on November 26th, so make sure to sign up and get in your morning trot before the Thanksgiving feast!
