In the first quarter, Helix started off strong with a lead of 15 to 10.

The student section had a theme of, “a day at the beach” and many students showed up with towels and sunscreen on their faces.

The second quarter ended with Helix having 26 points and Grossmont at 23 points.

When asked about the team’s performance during the game, Sophomore Delshawn Traylor said, “Our coaches preach energy and attitude, and I feel like if we have a high energy level and a positive winning attitude, we can compete with any team out there.”

The third quarter was filled with points being scored by multiple players on Helix’s side, including free throws from seniors Carson Baker and Javon Davis.

The student sections from Helix and Grossmont had a game of yelling competitive chants across the court at each other, especially during the last quarter.

The last quarter ended with Helix gaining even more of a lead in the score.

So what can the team do to make sure that Varsity Basketball wins more games in the future?

“We always preach defense first when discussing how to beat an opponent,” Varsity coach Brennan Cassady said, “It does feel good to win, especially against a neighborhood rival like Grossmont. We are always striving for consistency, learning how to play at a high level like that for every game.

The most points scored in the game were made by seniors Jaylen Hinson with 22 points, Baker with 16 points, and Davis with 14 points.

The next basketball game will be away on Friday, Feb. 2nd, against Grossmont.
