Harry Styles, former member of One Direction, one of the “greatest” boy bands to this day, has released his solo single “Sign of the Times,” on Friday, Apr. 7, 2017.
After the band’s hiatus over a year ago, Styles has continued his artistic career with a role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Dunkirk film set to release on July 21, 2017, and his soon-to-be-released debut solo album.
Already No. 1 on the U.K. music charts, Styles’ single arose a great commotion on Twitter, even causing a major Spotify glitch on the day of the release, reported Teen Vogue.
According to the Rolling Stone, Styles himself explained that “Sign of the Times” is about childbirth and “from the point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there’s a complication. The mother is told, ‘the child is fine, but you’re not going to make it.’ The mother has five minutes to tell the child, ‘go forth and conquer.’”
The song itself is different from the One Direction pop material the public is used to.
Having a personal taste for “older music,” as Styles described it on the Rolling Stone, “Sign of the Times” is slow-paced as it starts off with a calming melody.
The song eventually kicks in with the chorus, yet still gives off a vintage vibe- something taken from an older ‘slow jam’.
Styles is in the process of creating his own musical career with a different style- rock music with a hint of the ‘classics’ influences and a whole lot of personal flavor, or in this case, his story.
As the Huffington Post stated, however, Styles didn’t want to seem as if “he’s tried to re-create the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, Nineties.”
The upcoming album, as of now, is still nameless and as announced by Styles himself, will be out on May 12
