According to Glamour News, Coachella is on the top five country’s most popular music festivals. Their official name, “’The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival” brings together the world’s most famous artists, bands, and amazing art presentations.
This year the tables have turned and people are questioning if Coachella might be the best place to take a vacation. What’s making people think twice is that the head of Coachella, Phil Anschutz, is a hardcore supporter and investor of anti-LGBTQ groups and climate change denial, according to Los Angeles Weekly News.
New Musical Express reported that ProgressNow Colorado executive director, Ian Silverii was shook when he was informed about this and has responded about the situation,“Phil Anschutz’s extensive influence in Colorado politics has been known for years, but the degree of his support for anti-LGBTQ groups that fund extremist hate groups like Gordon Kligenschmitt’s ‘Pray in Jesus Name’ is shocking.”
Silverii has also said that not respecting the LGBTQ rights is past our history, “At a time in American history when discrimination and violence against LGBTQ citizens is on the rise, support for pro-discrimination groups puts Anschutz on the wrong side of Colorado, and on the wrong side of history.”
To make the update worse, Los Angeles Weekly News also reported that Philip Anschutz, the head of Coachella’s company, donates thousands of dollars to anti-LGBTQ groups such as ultra-conservative, anti-LGBTQ National Christian Foundation, Family Research Council and Mission American Foundation.
Green Peace, an organization that wants a healthier Earth, has previously described Philip Anschutz as a “financier of climate science denial groups.”
However, the Daily Mail News announced that Anschutz defensively argues that the rumors are all fake, “It is all garbage. I unequivocally support the rights of all people without regard to sexual orientation.”
Los Angeles Weekly News doesn’t agree with the boycott, because it won’t affect the billionaire Phil Anschutz in anyway. However they do suggest a better idea: “Instead of a boycott, I propose this: go to Coachella, but speak out. Make a donation to Freedom for all Americans in honor of Philip Anschutz. Find a pro-LGBTQ organization going to Coachella and offer them your time, money and support.”
Bill Eichner, host of the “Bill On The Street” on Twitter has gotten over three thousand retweets stating, “Never been to Coachella and won’t be going now. Neither should you.”
This chaos has left people frustrated about making a decision to attend Coachella and questions if this is where to spend their weekend at.
