Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides reproductive health services both in the United States and globally.
As President Donald Trump took office, he has not wasted any time in taking action for the promises he made during his campaign.
One of the first executive orders Trump signed was to defund Planned Parenthood. Trump signed the order surrounded by seven other men on Jan. 23, 2017, just two days after millions of women hit the streets to march for women’s rights across the country and across the globe.
According to the Washington Times, “The policy, known as the Mexico City Policy or the Global Gag Rule, was first ushered in under Ronald Reagan and bars federal funds from going to foreign organizations that perform abortions overseas or lobby for the practice’s legalization in other countries.”
This policy will essentially make it difficult for women to have abortions in Mexico and other countries.
After Trump signed the order, chaos flooded the streets causing many women and men to protest.
The International Planned Parenthood Federation said it will continue to promote abortion around the globe and forfeit the $100 million it had received annually from the U.S. government, reported The Washington Times.
“Republican lawmakers [who have supported Trump through this executive order], have vowed to take [government funding] away as part of the repeal and replacement of Obamacare,” according to USA Today.
Planned Parenthood not only deals with abortions or help to prevent pregnancies, but they also provide services such as HIV screenings and sexually transmitted diseases testing for women, men, and young people. Planned Parenthood educates and informs people of their health and reproductive care, according to their website.
Wisconsin Democratic Representative, Gwen Moore told USA Today, “I know more than one woman who has become pregnant because they didn’t have money at the right time to buy their birth control. This is going to set women back at least 50 years.”
Mary Alice Carter, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood, responded to the “Defund PP” rally in a statement to The Huffington Post.
“At the end of the day, no organization does more to prevent unintended pregnancies and the need for abortion than Planned Parenthood,” she said. “If opponents of abortion were serious about lowering the abortion rate in this country, they’d be working alongside Planned Parenthood to expand people’s access to effective birth control, sex education, and preventive health care ― rather than elbowing their way into the personal medical decisions of families across the country.”
