It costs New York City more than one million dollars a day to protect President-elect Donald Trump and his family, according to CNN.
New York Police Department officers are protecting them in the form of constant security guards around Trump Tower and are also providing Secret Service at screening checkpoints.
“This is a very substantial undertaking. It will take substantial resources,” New York Mayor Bill De Blasio told Fortune News. “We will begin the conversation with federal government shortly on reimbursement for the NYPD for some of the costs that we are incurring,” he said.
Trump’s presence has made Manhattan a difficult place to live. According to CNN News, Bill de Blasio also pointed out during a press conference, “We have never had a situation where the president of the United States would be here on such a regular basis.”
New York City is aware that the daily cost won’t be decreasing anytime soon. Trump will still be presentable at Trump Tower because his wife, Melania Trump, and their 10-year-old son, Barron, are not moving to the White House, until Barron is done with school. Trump will also visit New York frequently when he moves in the White House.
“The campaign has been difficult for Barron Trump, and she is really hoping to keep disruption to a minimum,” Trump’s campaign told Washington Post News.
This situation came as a result of New York City being asked by the U.S. government for up to $35 million to cover security costs for protecting President-elect Donald Trump, according to Reuters News.
His presence there, while having special guests to interview for his possible administration has caused traffic and frustrated community members and tourists.
When Trump travels throughout the city, law enforcement now has to close streets, such as the Lincoln Tunnel being closed during rush hour when Donald Trump is nearby.
In the meantime officials will find solutions to make New York City a better place according to Officials.
