Due to the recent light being shed on the extremely harmful effects of climate change, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has proposed a “Green New Deal,” which will provide more benefits and a better way of life to all people, especially vulnerable communities in the United States.

AOC is a representative of the 14th congressional district of New York. When growing up, AOC noticed the hardships that working people experienced, especially after the death of her father, which caused her to take up a job in waitressing to support her family. Familiar with struggles, AOC works in advocating for social, racial, economic, and environmental justice. AOC has endorsed Bernie Sanders as a presidential candidate who will take up the issue of climate change. Bernie Sanders has even argued how President Trump thinks that climate change is simply a hoax and called the president “dangerously wrong,” as originally published by The New York Times

According to The Climate Reality, 97% of climate scientists agree that humans are the cause of gas emissions, the cause of the climate crisis. With this increase in temperatures, sea levels are rising, there is an increase in wildfires, severe storms, droughts, and other catastrophic events that threaten human life and infrastructure, says The Green New. Because of these extreme and negative impacts that rising temperatures have done to our world, AOC has decided to propose a plan to put a stop to the output of gas emissions in the United States.

AOC argues in “The Green New Deal,” that the people mainly affected by climate change are those in frontline and vulnerable communities. These communities include people such as communities of color, migrants, women, low-income communities, the elderly, and more. Climate change creates more vulnerability to people in poverty because of the fact that their homes might be destroyed, causing them to become displaced and other disasters such as. These occurrences happen all over the world, and AOC hopes to diffuse, if made law, “The Green New Deal,” to other countries so that the world will become efficient in using clean methods of energy.

In her proposal, AOC explains how the United States has been historically responsible for the most carbon emissions expelled compared to other countries. With the United State’s advancements in technology, AOC determines our capability to switch from using fossil fuels to clean energy sources is the responsibility of the country. Both Senator Bernie Sanders and AOC have promised that the “Green New Deal,” will create more jobs in the clean energy sectors. Along with this, frontline and vulnerable communities will be included in making decisions throughout the process.

There have been critics of the piece of legislation. Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives notably said, “The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it right?” as published by CBS. Others argue that the idea of changing the whole method of transportation is just undoable and costly. USA Today even published sentiments that the call to change is socialist in itself with much dependence on the government.

If the “Green New Deal” is put into place, there would be much change in our society. These changes, according to the proposal, would benefit the people of the United States as well as those around the world. Only time will tell if the “Green New Deal” will pass, and it will take much work on the side of the Democratic Party.
