With Halloween just right around the corner, what better way to get in the spooky spirit than to kick off the holiday with some classic movies? Whether you want to watch something lighthearted and nostalgic, or straight spine-chilling, there’s something in this list for everyone.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Start off your Halloween movie marathon right with a cult classic. The Nightmare Before Christmas is the perfect balance of spooky and heartwarming. It follows Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king, who gets tired of the same routine of Halloween and scary, so he attempts to bring Christmas to Halloweentown.
Halloweentown will bring you back to your childhood Halloween memories. It’s centered around a girl named Marnie who follows grandma to Halloweentown and finds out that she is a witch! Halloweentown is where all supernatural beings can live in peace. Except, peace is nowhere to be found when Marnie finds out that she must help save the world in a fight against evil.
Beetlejuice is centered around a family moving into a new house that is haunted by a couple who died in a car accident. When the couple is not able to scare the family out of the residence, Beetlejuice comes to help, which quickly turns dangerous. This is a thrilling movie, perfect for any movie night, but even better at Halloween time.
Hocus Pocus is a classic, I used to watch it with my siblings every single year at this time, and it never gets old– trust me. The movie follows three teenagers as they accidentally set a coven of evil witches free in an abandoned house where they used to live. They must steal the witches’ evil book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.
The Sixth Sense
The Sixth Sense follows a young boy named Cole who has a dark secret – he sees dead people. He confides in a child psychologist, Dr. Crowe, to help him through this phenomenon, but another dark secret abruptly unfolds. This movie has one of the best plot twists I have ever seen, and it truly is one of my favorites.
It is a scarier one on this list. Seven outcasts must come together when a shapeshifting evil clown called Pennywise comes to haunt their small hometown of Derry, Maine. There are two versions of this movie, but I would strongly recommend the 2017 version. It will have you on the edge of your seat for the entirety of the movie, and that’s a guarantee.
This one is definitely s scarier one too, maybe not for a family movie night. But, seeing as though it is named after the holiday, it’s the perfect movie for Halloween night. Halloween follows Michael Meyers as he escapes from prison after he was locked up for 15 years for brutally murdering his sister as a young child. He returns to his hometown to look for his next victim….
Taking it back to something much more lighthearted, Ghostbusters is a family favorite with the perfect mix of spooky and funny. The movie is about a team of scientists who decide to hunt ghosts for a living after being fired. They come across a gateway to another dimension and accidentally set a bunch of evil free across New York, and now they must save their city.
Coraline isn’t so much a scary movie as it is a creepy and fascinating film, and quite possibly my favorite thing to watch every year when Halloween time comes around. This movie is centered around a young girl who, upon moving to a new house, gets to exploring and finds a portal into another dimension, a seemingly perfect world. But everything is not as it seems, and Coraline gets into some trouble. This film has the perfect eerie vibe for Halloween, and it won’t disappoint.
So now it’s time to get cozy with some popcorn and some friends because Halloween time is no doubt the best time for movie marathons. Who knows, you may find a new favorite.
