The U.S. faces a deadly and historic arctic blast due to the Polar Vortex traveling south. The Polar Vortex is a giant heap of cold arctic air that lingers around The North and South Pole.
During the summer, the cold air shrinks, and expands in the winter, but what caused the vortex to ,travel so far south? Weatherbug believes it is, “probably a mix of human-caused climate change and natural variability.”
The weather has caused schools and business to close, as well as flights to be delayed. It was especially cold in some regions that the U.S. Postal Service could not deliver mail despite their famous motto, “neither snow nor rain.” The weather is now responsible for 21 deaths and hundreds more have been rushed to the hospitals for cold-related injuries. The cold, arctic air turned Illinois into a tundra with record breaking temperatures of -38,
which was colder than Antarctica at the time.
The Weather Channel even went as far as to say it is “one of the coldest Midwest outbreaks in a generation.”
President Donald Trump tweeted his stance on the issue saying, “In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder. People can’t last outside even for minutes. What the hell is going on with Global Warming? Please come back fast, we need you!”
Despite the intensity of the cold winds, temperatures are supposed to bounce back into spring-like weather.
Jeff Masters, Weather Underground Meteorology Director, states, “I don’t think there’s ever been a case where we’ve seen [such a big] shift in temperatures.” Although the warmer temperatures will bring relief, they will also bring more problems such as flooding and crumbling roads.
To all those affected by the weather, stay safe…. and stay inside!
