The Pumpkin Spice Latte. You either love it, or you hate it. Same goes for your feelings on the people who drink them.

As a devoted lover of all things autumn, I can understand the anticipation coffee lovers have for that first day of September when the legendary PSL is available.

Last autumn, the time came for me to get in on the PSL hype. I had been hearing about the famed autumnal drink for years, and I had finally built up an appreciation for coffee. Sure, it wasn’t my favorite, but if this renowned drink had this much fame, surely anyone could enjoy it.

So on that fateful day in September of 2017, I set out for Starbucks. Upon my arrival, I could feel the anticipation of a million excited autumn lovers build up in my chest. I ordered my drink, gave my name, paid and waited. After a few moments, I heard my name and received my drink.

As I brought the lid to my lips and took a sip, I was filled with confusion. It was… disgusting. How could this be? The acclaimed Pumpkin Spice Latte- a disappointment?

Sure, I wasn’t the biggest fan of coffee in the first place, but this was beyond that. It tasted like… pumpkin! Sure, I knew this was the case before, but you would think that Starbucks would have the sense to make it more spice than pumpkin.

Trying to salvage my enjoyment, I rushed home and added more cinnamon. It helped a bit, but not enough for me to buy it again, or call myself a fan.

In the end, I cannot say I enjoyed the Pumpkin Spice Latte. However, I admire the devoted autumn lovers who wait every year for that moment when they can get their perfect drink again. Maybe this year, after becoming a true coffee lover, I will try it again,

For now, I will stay off the PSL train.
