On Jan. 11th, Helix Varsity Girls Water Polo played an away game against Granite Hills and came home with a win; 10-9.

#16 Shelby Pletcher, Sophmore

When asked how it felt to win such a close game, Sophomore Shelby Pletcher, a second-year Varsity player, expressed, “It always feels relieving to come out on top after a super close game. It makes up for all of the effort and pain you put into the last seconds.”

The entire game was a back-and-forth of goals. With the first goal for Helix from Ashley Knuteson, third-year Varsity Player, and Helix Senior.

Following that, Senior Tausala Schwalger, Shelby Pletcher, and once again, Ashley Knuteson scored to end the first quarter at 4-3.

The second quarter consisted of Knuteson scoring two more goals.

#9 Ashley Knuteson, Senior

When asked what strategies the girls used to win the game because they were in an Olympic-sized pool, Knuteson said “Since we played in their pool, which is much larger and wider than ours, we had to condition a few weeks in advance. Our main strategy was to mostly counter and it was fairly successful.”

During the third quarter, the team gained a larger lead by scoring four more goals by Knuteson, Schwalger, and two by Pletcher. They ended the third quarter with the score of 10-7.

In the fourth quarter, Granite gave Helix more of a challenge. Although the girls were tiring out and the score got to 10-9. With 30 seconds left in the quarter and the ball in Helix’s possession, the team used Granite’s large pool to their advantage and passed the ball until the clock ran out.

Fourth quarter ended with no goals from Helix, but with a win.

When asked how the girls could improve for the remaining season, Coach Lenelle Wylie replied: “ Girls should continually analyze their own play in order to make quicker and better decisions.”

The next home game is Jan. 31st against West Hills. Come out and support your Scotties!
