Before the official release of “Orange is the New Black” on Netflix, Friday June 9th, a cyber criminal by the username of The Dark Overlord @tdohack3r leaked the first ten episodes on thepiratebay.org.

The Dark Overlord posted a link to download the episodes on their Twitter feed. They also threatened other television networks, “Who is next on the list? FOX, IFC, NAT GEO, and ABC. Oh, what fun we’re all going to have. We’re not playing any games anymore,” read this tweet..

The Dark Overlord demanded 50 bitcoin ($50,000 dollars) back in January in exchange for his non-release of the shows in question, reported Variety Digital news.

During season four, “Orange is the New Black” averaged 23 million views per episode, according to Symphony Advanced Media. So the question is, is it worth it for Netflix to pay up to The Dark Overlord for their own show?

Two main questions are left unanswered through the Internet. Who is The Dark Overlord? Why is The Dark Overlord doing this?

Unfortunately The Dark Overlord has successfully maintained their identity a secret. Security blogger Graham Cluley stated in a blog post, “No one knows who The Dark Overlord is. No one even knows if he or she is one lone hacker, or a group of hackers.”

Although The Dark Overlord has kept their identity a secret, that doesn’t mean we don’t know anything about them. Thanks to Cluley, we know that The Dark Overlord appeared online last summer. We know that The Dark Overlord gains access to a network, copies sensitive info, then threatens to release the sensitive info unless satisfied financially.

Now why would The Dark Overlord feel the need to do such a thing, simply for the money, assumed by Variety digital.

For viewers who don’t want to access episode through the Twitter feed, the entire season will be available through Netflix streaming on June 9th.
