Over three years ago a young women by the name of Kimberly Arteaga was reported missing from Lemon Grove, on January 7 2014, she was only 16-years-old.

On January 13, 2017, a person walking a dog in the Otay Valley Regional Park in Chula Vista found human remains and told Chula Vista police. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and DNA samples were sent to the sheriff’s crime lab for identification, according to Crime Watch Daily.

“We took a couple of months for those results to come back so her remains were not positively identified until March of this year,” said Lt. Nelson.  “The Medical Examiner’s office was able to determine those remains had died from homicide”, according to Fox 5 News.

On Monday, April 24, the coroner’s office confirmed that the remains did belong to Kimberly Arteaga, and that she had been murdered right around the time of her disappearance. There are more details on the incident but only open to law enforcement because it is still an active case.

On of Arteagas close friends in high school, Aaron Bonilla told reporters that he believes that the killer was her boyfriend at the time of her disappearance.

“Love and caring girl dude,” Aaron Bonilla, told Fox 5 News.

“It was the boyfriend at the time, it has to be. There’s no doubt about it,” said Bonilla.  “It just breaks my heart to know that my friend just passed in a very brutal way.”

Lt. Kenneth Nelson of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said that the boyfriend has been named as a person of interest in the case, according to Aberrant Nation.

One of the biggest questions during this case was how did a young women from Lemon Grove get down to Chula Vista.

Authorities have sealed all other details about the Lemon Grove resident’s death. No suspects have been publicly identified, according to 10 News.

Arteaga’s brother created a memorial at the trail where her remains were found. He posted pictures of it on Instagram.

Anyone with information about the case should call the homicide unit at 858-974-2321 or 858-565-5200. Callers can remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 and are eligible for up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest
