On Sunday, April 30, a mass shooting in La Jolla, CA resulted in the loss of two lives — one being the shooter — as seven other people were injured and are now recovering.

Monique Clarke was identified as a victim who died due to the gunshot injuries, officials announced.

The shooting took place in the La Jolla Crossroads Apartments pool while friends and family were celebrating their friend’s birthday. Police officers soon responded to multiple calls of the mass shooting described Fox 5 News.

The shooter, identified as 49-year-old Peter Selis, was killed by the San Diego police on arrival of the scene, CBS 8 and other news sites stated that.

Police reports describe that Selis likely didn’t know any of the victims and Chief Shelley Zimmerman of the San Diego Police continued that she does not believe that the shooting racially motivated.

The San Diego Union Tribune stated that the shooter was talking on the phone to his ex-girlfriend while during the time, and that investigators believed Selis was “despondent over his recent break up, and that his victims were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

A press conference was called on Monday at the Scripps Memorial Hospital where one of the victims, Thomas Blea, praised the firefighters, police officers, and most notably, the security officer that helped three victims to an ambulance.

“That guy saved us a lot of time. Getting us to the fire department in a safe zone and getting us here,” said Blea.
A GoFundMe was started to pay for the medical expenses from the shooting and one for victim Kion Gould, and a memorial service page for Monique Clark.
