Ed Sheeran, 26 -year- old British singer/songwriter, released his newest, third album “Divide” on Mar. 3, 2017, and has instantly rose up in the charts as it took him nearly two years to put this album together.
The Rolling Stones said, “Sheeran’s musical history lesson is both well-timed and rip-roaringly fun, another example of his still-evolving craft.”
Although Sheeran is known for mainly a pop genre, this new album has a sensitive-acoustic craft to it. The bonus track includes features of rapping and singing, club music and orchestras, a tin whistle and hallmarks of Irish folk.
The songs on his album include: “Shape of You”, “Castle on the Hill”, and “Perfect”. All of these songs have at least one thing in common with each other, which is that romance is the main theme of these songs.
This is an amazing comeback for Ed Sheeran as the timing is perfect to release his album, while such other artists including Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and others aren’t really releasing albums or producing many songs. This year is all about Ed Sheeran.
Sheeran’s songs are aesthetically pleasing in that they give off a warm, campfire, nostalgia, comforting, scented candles feeling.
It’s clear in each of his songs that Sheeran doesn’t just belong to one scene, as he fiddles with different musical impressions and how his voice is more smoother and deep in “Dive” than in “Shape of You”, which is more upbeat and very easy for fans to make club remixes from.
I think “What do I Know” is the most interesting song on the album because it toys with the idea music and love from people can change the world. Sheeran also challenges ideas that the little things don’t matter more than how love can change the world.
“Love can change the world in a moment
But what do I know?
Love can change the world in a moment.”
The last song on the album is ‘Save Myself’ which sounds to be a reflection on Sheeran’s life and admits that before he can love someone else, he has to love himself.
The album is fun to listen to but I don’t recommend listening to it all at once, as it will be an emotional roller coaster.
Billboard.com headlined Ed Sheeran’s ‘Divide’ Bows at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart With 2017’s Biggest Debut.
Overall, I give this album a definite 5/5 paws for Ed Sheeran and I recommend everyone to listen to his new album “Divide”
