Of course we all know Cristiano Ronaldo is a beautiful human being, but there’s no denying that the statue made in his honor on Mar. 29 in Portugal, is anything but.
According to The Verge, the statue was created to honor Cristiano Ronaldo after the renaming of the (previously) Madeira Airport to the Cristiano Ronaldo Airport in Madeira, Portugal, where Ronaldo is practically “a demigod.”
Naming airports after professional athletes is not new however, Fox News reported that the George Best Belfast City Airport was named after Irish soccer player, George Best, a year after he passed away.
Emanuel Santos, a local sculptor in Portugal created the statue using “some photos of Cristiano Ronaldo that [he] found on the internet, nothing specific,” reported Sports Illustrated.
Unfortunately, the media didn’t seem to think the similarities were all that close.
Meme after meme was created in response to Santos’ statue with the exaggerated Ronaldo grin and bulging eyes.
Ronaldo himself however, gave his own blessing and “only asked for some wrinkles that give him a certain expression in his face when he’s about to laugh to be changed. He said it made him look older and asked for it to be thinned out a bit to make it smoother and more jovial. But they [Cristiano Ronaldo and his brother] gave it the go-ahead; they liked what they saw,” reported the Guardian.
