Split is a movie in which James McAvoy plays a man who doesn’t have a stable personality throughout the entire film because of the fact that he has 23 personalities, both male and female of different ages, and his character continues to which throughout the film. (If spoilers aren’t you thing then do not continue reading.)
Casey Cooke (Anya Taylor-Joy), Claire Benoit (Haley Lu Richardson), and Marcia (Jessica Sula) are all victims of McAvoy’s kidnapping to “feed” the new 24th personality of which they call the Beast that is said to be the strongest of all the personalities.
Meanwhile all the girls are locked in a closet, McAvoy’s several personalities are struggling to stay sane while waiting for the arrival of the beast, turns to his therapist Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley) for assistance of wanting to be able to protect the first and true identity of McAvoy’s character.
Although the movies does reveal that McAvoy is the character that has 23 different personalities, there are only eight personalities shown throughout the film. Both Maricia and Claire and nonentities in the way that they are only shown in only a few shots of the film and given little background information about their personal life.
Unlike the two other girls, Cooke is given a backstory throughout the film with several flashbacks about her childhood life that then reveals a scarring secret as to why she has so much knowledge about hunting and why she is a fearless character that ends up surviving throughout McAvoy’s plot to keep the girls alive in order to sacrifice them to the “beast” that he is waiting for.
McAvoy’s character has escaped injured from his master plan that has failed and foreshadows that this has not been the end of his actions and he will rise from the shadows again.
Split has a twist ending that combines with another movie that M. Night Shyamalan directed, Unbreakable, that Shyamalan has confirmed that will have an upcoming sequel.
