On Wednesday, Feb. 1, a family was devastated and community members mourned the death of two minors as well as an 18-year-old. Two out of the four dogs that were in the car died on impact as well.
A family in a small, four-door, black Acura was turning in the left turn lane from Lemon Grove Ave. onto Massachusetts Ave. when “they were broadsided by a southbound 2003 Dodge Durango SUV,” states the San Diego Union-Tribune.
An 18- and 13-year-old passenger died on the scene while another 8-year-old child died, due to her injuries, while in the hospital, Fox 5 describes.
Fox also reports that “A 4-year-old girl who was riding in the Acura and its 20-year-old driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and were hospitalized.”
So far, the fatal front-seat passenger has been identified as 18-year-old Elizabeth Soto, NBC News discloses.
Alongside that, NBC added that “Deputies said the impact severely damaged the Acura and first respondents used the jaws of life to extricate the victims,” while others were pinned inside.
A total of six people–five in the Acura, and the 30-year-old driver of the SUV–were involved in the collision, San Diego Union-Tribune covers.
Investigators do not yet know who was at fault, though they do understand that one car had ran a red light, San Diego Union-Tribune concludes.
People from the community have placed candles, flowers and a teddy bear at the crash location to commemorate the lives lost.
